LET’S JOURNEY THROUGH THE DESIGN ERAS
If you've been paying careful attention to our socials these past few months, you may have noticed a bit of a trend. It's been an absolute blast working our way through the eras, and celebrating the design styles that are unique to each decade.
Let’s do a recap to show you what made each era so special!
GLITZY, GLAMOUROUs, GLORIOUS 20s
Design in this time was graphic and simple, characterised by the Art Nouveau style. That being said, there it was also juxtaposed with opulent, ornamental and often over the top design that speaks of drama and dazzle.
SUBDUED, SIMPLE, SOMBRE 30s
The Great Depression coupled, with the first steps into modern technology, majorly impacted design in this era. The 30s saw the rise of the futurist art movement, and 3D-style gradients and textures became popular.
DEEP, DARK, DARING 40s
The 1940s were characterised by the war, which led to the development of a unique and striking design style in sombre shades of red, black and grey - led by Soviet propaganda artists. Stylistically, modernism was becoming a more influential movement.
STYLISH, SOPHISTICATED, SIMPLE 50s.
In response to the excessive and bold designs of previous decades, the 1950s saw the rise of minimalism. It's not surprising that designers started embracing more straightforward, clean compositions that focused on simplicity and functionality.
SILLY, PSYCHO, SPIRITED 60s
This era was characterised by the psychedelic art style. Known for its neon shades, groovy lines and vivid typography, design in this era gives the impression of an image that is always moving.
CREATIVE, COLLAGEY, CRAZY 1970s
On the design front, designers started mixing various historical design styles, making reference to past art and graphic design movements through visual pastiche and appropriation. We also love this era for the application of collage techniques, used in new experimental ways.
BOLD, BRIGHT & BRILLIANT 80s
But unlike the 1920s, the 80s were characterised by the use of bold typography. The Art Deco revival typography of the 80s was sans serif, with thick, additional strokes, while using strong ornamentation and angles.
FUN, FREE & FRIVOLOUS 90s
This era is most known for its free-spirited nature. Naturally, graphic design of the time reflected that same playful and irreverent attitude. In this era, we see trends that include geometric, abstract shapes and patterns, combined with vivid colour combos. Iconic!
