10 THINGS WE WISH WE KNEW AS YOUNG DESIGNERS

So, this one’s for you, young designer – we asked our goldies (not oldies) what they wish they knew as a young designer, so hopefully this will help set you up for success.
#1 Forget about your portfolio. |
The great work will come naturally, when you focus on the client and their needs – we promise! |
#2 Pick your battles. |
You won't always agree with the client your creative director. Just hear them out and be willing to compromise. |
#3 You only know the basics. |
You've graduated, but your learning journey is only just beginning! Be open to input and guidance. |
#4 Ask for help. |
Success is a team effort! So, learn to be less protective over your work, and open yourself up to help and advice. |
#5 Separate yourself from your work. |
When someone criticises your work, they are not criticising you as a person. Embrace the growth! |
#6 It will get easier! |
The real world looks very different to what you learned in uni. But trust us when we say you get used to it. |
#7 Feedback is a chance to grow. |
That first REAL review is always tough. But if you take the feedback, you will become a better designer. |
#8 Talk less, listen more. |
As a newbie designer, you're naturally enthusiastic! But try not to be the loudest voice in the room. |
#9 Practice makes perfect! |
Design is a skill that you need to practice. So, grab every opportunity to design and create. |
#10 It's all about relationships. |
No matter how good a designer you are, no one will want to hire you if you're not pleasant to work with. |
